A PO may already define the product, size and controlled properties, then add “electroplating” later. That does not necessarily replace the original part definition, but it changes the supplied and confirmed condition. The original documents still matter; the surface condition, applicable documents, sample question and lot evidence can no longer be carried over as one unchanged conclusion.
For high-strength steel fasteners, this is often oversimplified. “High strength” is not a universal threshold that can be separated from the actual part, drawing and applicable requirements, and plated parts do not all carry the same risk conclusion. Until those inputs are aligned, electroplating should not be treated as a colour choice or one report as a release decision.
The part definition remains; the supplied condition changes
The product standard or drawing, part number, dimensions, thread and previously controlled properties still define the part. A newly specified electroplated finish adds a surface condition that must be tied to the same RFQ, PO, drawing or approved change record.
The public page for ISO 4042:2022 describes electroplated coating systems for steel fasteners and requirements and recommendations intended to minimize hydrogen-embrittlement risk. Its public abstract is not a source for project process parameters or release criteria. ISO 4042:2022/Amd 1:2026 exists, but its technical changes must not be guessed without controlled content.
Reopen the evidence lines, not just the report request
The change can reopen part identity, the applicable surface requirement, the question a sample must answer, and the relationship between lot evidence and the actual supplied condition. A material certificate addresses material matters. Appearance, corrosion-related items or another single result address only their own stated scope; none automatically proves a whole lot or final joint performance.
ISO 15330:1999 identifies a preloading test method for detection of hydrogen embrittlement. That does not make it the default method or sampling plan for every part, sample or lot. ISO/TR 20491:2019 supports understanding of the fundamentals, not replacement of drawings, controlled standards or a project quality plan.
Give samples and lot records a defined job
A sample is not a smaller lot. It can answer only the question written in advance for the stated part, drawing condition, supplied surface state or assembly condition. Lot records should connect the part, the actual plated condition, applicable documents, samples or test pieces, and the lot relationship. The PO or approved change should state how evidence, delivery condition and incoming acceptance relate.
Write the plating addition as a reviewable change
- identify the product standard or drawing, part number, dimensions and original controlled properties;
- name the added or changed electroplating system, source document and approved revision;
- state the question to be reopened by the sample;
- connect the project records and inspection basis to the supplied condition; and
- define lot identification, quantity and incoming-acceptance relationship.
