Retaining Washer — Product Description

Retaining washer, also known as lock washer or stop washer, is a mechanical anti-loosening component typically used in conjunction with bolts and nuts. It achieves locking by bending tabs into nut slots, shaft grooves, or equipment surfaces, or through wedge-shaped surface interlock to generate clamping force, effectively preventing threaded connections from loosening under vibration, impact, and alternating loads. The product is commonly made of carbon steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel, with surface treatments including blackening, zinc plating, and Dacromet, offering reliable anti-loosening performance and excellent corrosion resistance. Common types include single ear/double ear retaining washers, external tab/internal tab stop washers, round nut retaining washers, and double-stack self-locking washers (wedge-type lock washers).

Hot-dip galvanizing and Dacromet are common choices for outdoor applications. For humid, coastal or chemical environments, stainless steel 304/316 or higher corrosion-resistant solutions may be better.

Bolts and nuts should match nominal diameter, thread pitch, thread type, standard and strength grade. High-strength connections should also use suitable washers and anti-loosening solutions.
