SQUARE TAPER WASHER — PRODUCT INTRODUCTION

The Square Taper Washer is a specialized fastener designed for connecting channel steel, I-beams, and other structural steel sections. Its shape is square or rectangular with a tapered cross-section — one side flat and the other sloped — specifically engineered to compensate for the natural slope or taper on the inner flange surfaces of channel steel and I-beams. Since the inner flanges of channel steel and I-beams have a natural slope, directly installing a bolt would cause one-sided bearing, subjecting the bolt shank to bending forces and reducing connection strength. The square taper washer’s sloped design levels the inclined surface, ensuring the nut bearing surface is perpendicular to the bolt shank and that bolt loads are distributed evenly.

Product specifications strictly comply with GB/T 852-1988 (Square Taper Washers for I-Beams), GB/T 853-1988 (Square Taper Washers for Channel Steel), and international standards such as DIN 434 (Square Taper Washers for Channel Steel) and DIN 435 (Square Taper Washers for I-Beams). Materials include Q235 carbon steel, 35#/45# steel, and SUS304/SUS316 stainless steel. Through combinations of different materials and surface treatments, these washers can meet a wide range of structural steel connection requirements — from general building structures to highly corrosive environments.

I. PRODUCT FEATURES

Unique Taper Compensation Design:
The square taper washer has one flat side and one sloped side, precisely matching the inner flange slopes of channel steel (approximately 5°) and I-beams (approximately 8°). During installation, the sloped side aligns with the steel member’s flange slope while the flat side provides a level bearing surface for bolt heads or nuts, effectively compensating for the angular deviation of the structural steel flange.

Square Geometry Prevents Rotation:
Unlike traditional round washers, the square taper washer uses a square or rectangular outer profile. During assembly, it effectively prevents the washer itself from rotating, ensuring accurate and reliable positioning during installation.

Standardized Design:
Product dimensions and performance strictly follow GB/T 852, GB/T 853, DIN 434, and DIN 435 standards. Sizes cover nominal diameters from M6 to M36, with high dimensional precision and exact fit with bolts and nuts of the same specification.

Diverse Materials and Surface Treatments:
A rich product line is available, with materials spanning Q215 and Q235 carbon steel, 35#/45# medium carbon steel, and SUS304/SUS316 stainless steel. Surface treatments include zinc plating (blue-white zinc, trivalent zinc), black oxide, hot-dip galvanizing, Dacromet, phosphating, and more. Carbon steel square taper washers offer moderate cost, suitable for general load-bearing applications; stainless steel washers provide obvious advantages in corrosion and moisture resistance.

Clear Classification Markings:
DIN 434 square taper washers have two grooves on the surface, used for channel steel (U-section); DIN 435 washers have one groove, used for I-beams (I-section), making identification and correct selection easy.

II. PRODUCT ADVANTAGES

Ensures Even Bolt Load Distribution, Enhancing Structural Safety:
The core advantage of the square taper washer is leveling the sloped surface of the structural steel flange, so the bolt bearing surface is flat after installation, avoiding bending moments caused by inclined loading. Without a square taper washer, the bolt bears load on only one side, significantly reducing the bolt’s load-carrying capacity and increasing structural risk.

Prevents Bolt Bending and Damage:
By keeping the nut bearing surface perpendicular to the bolt shank, the square taper washer prevents the shank from being subjected to bending forces during nut tightening, effectively protecting against bolt bending, deformation, or even fracture, and extending bolt service life.

Improves Connection Stability and Strength:
The square taper washer increases the bearing contact area, distributes clamping force, and prevents surface damage to the workpiece. It also makes steel member connections more secure, significantly improving overall structural stability.

Effectively Prevents Loosening:
The square taper washer evenly distributes loads from the fastening point, protects the contact surfaces, and helps reduce loosening at the connection.

Excellent Corrosion Resistance and Long Service Life:
Stainless steel (304/316) square taper washers offer outstanding corrosion and rust resistance, particularly suitable for high-humidity, marine, and chemical equipment environments. Carbon steel washers with zinc plating, hot-dip galvanizing, Dacromet, or other surface treatments also meet general outdoor anti-corrosion requirements.

III. APPLICATION AREAS

The square taper washer is an indispensable fastener component in steel structures, construction, machinery, and other fields, with a wide range of applications.

Building Steel Structures:
Widely used in the connection nodes of channel steel and I-beams in industrial and civil building steel structures, a common fastener accessory in steel structure installation.

Bridges and Tunnel Engineering:
Used for bolted connections of structural steel members in bridge auxiliary structures and tunnel support systems, compensating for angular deviation and ensuring stable and secure connections.

Construction Machinery and Heavy Equipment:
Suitable for structural connections in construction machinery, engineering equipment, port machinery, and heavy-duty equipment.

Power and Energy Facilities:
Used for outdoor steel structure connections in wind turbine towers, power transmission towers, and photovoltaic mounting systems.

Chemical and Fluid Equipment:
Stainless steel square taper washers, with their excellent corrosion resistance, are suitable for chemical equipment, pressure piping systems, and other corrosive environments.

Railway and Transportation Facilities:
Referenced by railway industry standards such as TB/T 3329-2013, used in railway tracks, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure.

Marine and Shipbuilding Engineering:
316 stainless steel square taper washers offer outstanding salt spray corrosion resistance, suitable for marine environments, shipboard equipment, and outdoor facilities.

General Machinery Manufacturing:
Widely used for bolted connections of channel steel, I-beam frames, and support structures in various types of mechanical equipment.

Procurement Questions

Common procurement questions about specification, material, finish and delivery.

Please confirm the application position, load, connection thickness and working environment first, then match diameter, length, thread pitch, material, strength grade, surface finish and applicable standard. Drawings, photos or old samples help us quote more accurately.

Hot-dip galvanizing and Dacromet are common choices for outdoor applications. For humid, coastal or chemical environments, stainless steel 304/316 or higher corrosion-resistant solutions may be better.

Please provide drawings or 3D files, material, dimensions, tolerance, grade, surface treatment, packing method and quantity. If drawings are not ready, samples or installation photos can also be reviewed.

Bolts and nuts should match nominal diameter, thread pitch, thread type, standard and strength grade. High-strength connections should also use suitable washers and anti-loosening solutions.
