Hexagon Head Bolt — Product Overview

Product Introduction

The hexagon head bolt is a versatile mechanical fastener consisting of a hexagonal head and a threaded shank. Designed for use with a mating hexagonal nut, it secures two or more components with through-holes into a unified assembly. The hexagonal head profile accommodates standard wrenches or socket tools for efficient torque application during installation and removal. As a detachable fastening solution, simply unscrewing the nut separates the joined components—making installation, maintenance, and part replacement quick and straightforward.

The hexagon head bolt is the most widely used and universal bolt type across all industrial sectors, serving critical fastening roles in machinery manufacturing, construction engineering, and industrial structures worldwide.

I. Product Features

Hexagonal Head Design
The standard hexagonal head geometry offers a large wrench engagement surface, enabling efficient torque application with common hand tools or power sockets. The flat-faced profile provides stable contact, minimizing slippage (rounding) during tightening—a key reliability advantage over lower-contact-area designs.

Flexible Thread Configurations
Two thread forms are available:

  • Partial thread — GB/T 5782: The shank below the thread root extends as an unthreaded (smooth) body section, providing higher shear strength in the bolt cross-section and more stable clamp load behavior. Preferred for standard structural and mechanical assemblies.
  • Full thread — GB/T 5783: Threads extend along the full shank length (up to the head bearing face), offering maximum adjustability in clamp depth. Ideal for applications with variable joint thickness, through-bolt scenarios, or where the full shank thread engagement is needed.

Broad Dimensional Range
Thread sizes span M1.6 to M64, with two product tolerance grades:

  • Grade A (Precision Class): Tighter dimensional tolerances on head width, head height, and thread pitch—suitable for precision-machined assemblies and automated installation where d ≤ 24 mm and shorter lengths.
  • Grade B (Commercial Class): Standard tolerances for general-purpose structural and mechanical use.

Multiple Material Options
Available in carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel to suit diverse operating environments. Stainless steel variants offer superior corrosion resistance in humid, acidic, alkaline, or otherwise aggressive conditions.

Optional Surface Treatments
Surface finishing enhances corrosion resistance and appearance:

  • Zinc plating: Cost-effective indoor protection.
  • Zinc-nickel (Zn-Ni) alloy coating: Industry-leading corrosion protection—achieving 720+ hours in salt spray testing (ASTM B117)—making it ideal for automotive underbody, coastal, and outdoor power infrastructure applications.

II. Product Advantages

High Standardization & Universal Interchangeability
Manufactured in strict compliance with GB/T 5782 and GB/T 5783 national standards, equivalent to ISO 4014 / ISO 4017 and DIN 931 / DIN 933. Standardized geometry ensures seamless compatibility with standard nuts from any global supplier, streamlining procurement, inventory management, and field replacement.

Clear Property Class System for Precision Selection
Property classes span 5.6 → 8.8 → 9.8 → 10.9 → 12.9, enabling engineers to precisely match bolt strength to application requirements. Classes 8.8 and above are classified as high-strength bolts, manufactured from low-alloy or medium-carbon steel through quenching and tempering heat treatment—delivering reliable clamping force for demanding structural and mechanical connections.

Simple Installation & Maintenance
The hexagonal head’s flat wrench seats accommodate large torque values with standard tools, enabling rapid and repeated assembly/disassembly. This makes hexagon bolts the preferred choice for equipment requiring frequent maintenance, inspection, or component replacement.

High Reliability
Head fillet and chamfer geometries are engineered to reduce stress concentrations, improving fatigue resistance under cyclic loading. When paired with spring washers, lock nuts, or prevailing-torque fasteners, hexagon bolt assemblies effectively resist loosening under vibration and dynamic loads.

Outstanding Cost-to-Performance Ratio
Unlike specialized head types (e.g., socket head, Torx®, or flange bolts), the hexagon head is the most mature, tooling-efficient bolt design in mass production. Lower tooling and manufacturing costs translate directly to competitive pricing at high volumes, making it the default economic choice for general-purpose industrial fastening.

III. Application Scope

Mechanical Manufacturing
Fastening of machine tool components, electric motor housings, pump and valve flanges, construction machinery frames, and general equipment assembly.

Construction & Steel Structures
Steel frame connections, curtain wall subframe anchoring, pipe support fixing, bridge construction, and general structural bolting. High-strength large-hexagon (HV) structural bolts—with enlarged head dimensions for higher bearing capacity—are specifically designed for heavy structural joints in bridges, stadiums, and high-rise steel frame buildings.

Automotive & Transportation
Chassis suspension components, engine accessories, commercial vehicle body assembly, ship deck equipment mounting, and railway vehicle fastener applications.

Electrical & Power Equipment
Internal component fastening in distribution cabinets and control enclosures, as well as structural bolting of transmission line towers and substations.

Plumbing & HVAC Systems
Pipe support bracketing, flange connections, valve mounting, and ductwork fastening in water, gas, and ventilation systems.

Outdoor & Special Environments
Stainless steel hexagon bolts are the preferred choice for marine climates, chemical plants, wastewater treatment facilities, and other highly corrosive environments—preventing rust-induced joint failure. Hot-dip galvanized variants are widely specified for outdoor lighting, signage, and infrastructure.

Furniture Manufacturing & Hardware Assembly
Structural framing of metal furniture, industrial shelving systems, tool cabinets, and workbenches where strength, repeat disassembly, and cost efficiency are all required.

Procurement Questions

Common procurement questions about specification, material, finish and delivery.

Please confirm the application position, load, connection thickness and working environment first, then match diameter, length, thread pitch, material, strength grade, surface finish and applicable standard. Drawings, photos or old samples help us quote more accurately.

Hot-dip galvanizing and Dacromet are common choices for outdoor applications. For humid, coastal or chemical environments, stainless steel 304/316 or higher corrosion-resistant solutions may be better.

Please provide drawings or 3D files, material, dimensions, tolerance, grade, surface treatment, packing method and quantity. If drawings are not ready, samples or installation photos can also be reviewed.

Bolts and nuts should match nominal diameter, thread pitch, thread type, standard and strength grade. High-strength connections should also use suitable washers and anti-loosening solutions.
